It is the second largest city in Scotland and the seventh most populous in the United Kingdom. ? Edinburgh lies on the east coast of the Central Belt, along the Firth of Forth, near the North Sea. ? The city is called Athens of the North. The Old Town and New Town districts of Edinburgh were listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995 ● Edinburgh Castle ? Edinburgh Castle is located at the top of the Royal Mile, at the west end of Edinburghs Old Town. The volcanic Castle Rock offers a naturally defended position, with sheer cliffs to north and south, and a steep ascent from the west. The only easy approach is from the town to the east, and the castles defences are situated accordingly, with a series of gates protecting the route to the summit of the Castle Rock. ● University of Edinburgh ? It was the fourth university to be established in Scotland and the 6th in the United Kingdom, and is regarded as one of the most prestigious universities in the world. The university played an important role in leading Edinburgh to its reputation as a chief intellectual centre during the Age of Enlightenment, and helped give the city the nickname of the Athens of the north. ?Famous alumni ●The Edinburgh International Festival ?The Edinburgh International Festival is over fifty years old and has earned its reputation as one of the worlds greatest celebrations of the arts. ●Mary Kings Close ? Mary Kings Close is the organisation which funds and manages the annual Mary Kings Ghost Fest in Edinburgh.
