similartoothernon-hybridToyotavehicleswiththeexceptionofthehighvoltageelectricalsystem.

Itisimportanttorecognizeandunderstandthehighvoltageelectricalsystemfeaturesand

specificationsoftheToyotaAVALONHybrid,astheymaynotbefamiliartodismantlers.

Highvoltageelectricitypowerstheelectricmotor,generator,airconditioning(A/C)compressorand

inverter/converter.Allotherautomotiveelectricaldevicessuchastheheadlights,radio,and

gaugesarepoweredfromaseparate12Voltauxiliarybattery.Numeroussafeguardshavebeen

designedintotheAVALONHybridtohelpensurethehighvoltage,approximately244.8Volt,Nickel

MetalHydride(NiMH)HybridVehicle(HV)batterypackiskeptsafeandsecureinanaccident.

TheNiMHHVbatterypackcontainssealedbatteriesthataresimilartorechargeablebatteriesused

insomebatteryoperatedpowertoolsandotherconsumerproducts.Theelectrolyteisabsorbedin

thecellplatesandwillnotnormallyleakoutevenifthebatteryiscracked.Intheunlikelyevent

theelectrolytedoesleak,itcanbeeasilyneutralizedwithadiluteboricacidsolutionorvinegar.

Highvoltagecables,identifiablebyorangeinsulationandconnectors,areisolatedfromthemetal

chassisofthevehicle.
