Introduction:
Lowerlimbparalysisisacommoncomplicationinpatientswith
spinalcordinjury,stroke,andotherneurologicaldiseases.Theuseof
functionalelectricalstimulation(FES)isaneffectiveapproachtocontrol
musclemovementbyelectricalstimulationofthenervesthatinnervate
themuscles.Withadvancesintechnology,thedevelopmentof
neuroprosthesesbasedonFEShasbecomeanimportantresearch
directioninthefieldofrehabilitationengineering.Hereweproposeto
designalowerlimbmovementneuroprosthesisbasedonFES.
Objectives:
Theaimofthisstudyistodevelopalowerlimbmovement
neuroprosthesisbasedonFES,whichcancontrolthecontractionof
musclesinthelowerlimbofpatientswithparalysis.Theresearch
objectivesare:
1.TostudytheprinciplesofFESandthecharacteristicsoflower
limbmuscles.
2.TodesignelectroniccircuitsforcontrollingFESandauser-
friendlycontrolinterface.
3.Todevelopalgorithmsforcontrollingthestimulationofthe
musclesandthecoordinationofthemovements.
4.Toconductexperimentsonanimalsandhumanstoverifythe
feasibilityandeffectivenessoftheneuroprosthesis.
Methodology:
Theproposedneuroprosthesissystemconsistsofanelectronic
stimulationcontroldevice,anelectrodearray,andauserinterface.The
stimulationcontroldevicewillgenerateelectricalpulsesbasedonthe
algorithmstostimulatethemuscles.Theelectrodearraywillbeplaced
onthesurfaceofthetargetedmusclestodeliverelectricalstimulation.
Theuserinterfacewillallowtheusertoselectandcontrolthe
stimulationsettingsandcoordinatethemovements.
